Not only was it one of the best sounding albums of the ’9. As a bespectacled teenager with a guitar, Foster was added to my list of musical heroes, along with Buddy Holly and Elvis Costello. Through ‘Del Rio, TX 1. I discovered Foster’s earlier music with Bill Lloyd. Following Foster forward, I enjoyed his albums, not only for his singing, but for his ability to write songs that told stories. Radney Foster has now released a new album, and book, that is, perhaps, the best display of his talent as a storyteller. Radney Foster lost his voice in November of 2. He had to cancel shows, and could not even talk, having to communicate with his family through written notes. During that trying time of not being able to sing, Foster tried his hand at writing stories. Through the encouragement of his wife, and the critical eye of literary friends, he honed his new found craft, and now we have a book of short stories and a companion album called ‘For You to See the Stars’. Each song on the album is inspired by a story in the book, or, according to Foster, vice versa. I have listened to the album several times through, but at the time of writing this review, I have only read about half of the book. I can assure you that I will be finishing the book very soon. The album features ten tracks, nine new tunes, and a new recording of his hit “Raining On Sunday”. Some of the highlights of the album includes the beautiful title track, “Belmont and 6th” (a song about the struggles of vets), “The Greatest Show On Earth” (a beautiful picture of a family get- together), “It Ain’t Done With Me” (a song about having to deal with one’s past). I can assure that you will be hearing songs from this album on The Breakfast with Porkchop Show is the weeks and months to come. ![]() 2016. 2015. 2015. 2003. 2016. 2016. 2015. 2015. 2007. 2007. 2005. 2015. 2012. 2006. 2003. 2007. 2003. 2012. 2005. 2007. 2007. 2007. 2002. 2003. 2011. 2003. 2006. 2005. However, if you enjoy good storytelling, I encourage you to buy both the album and the book. It does not matter which you enjoy first, but enjoy them just the same. September 2. 0, 2. Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams have played important backing roles for scores of artists, including Roseanne Cash, Mavis Staples, Bob Dylan, and, most famously, Levon Helm, not only on recordings, but also as part of his legendary Midnight Rambles at his Woodstock, NY home. Although they have had quite a successful run in a musical support role for a who’s who of performers, this husband and wife duo struck out on their on with their 2. They have released a new project, ‘Contraband Love’, that highlights their songwriting prowess along with a mixture of country, blues, and rock music. The majority of the songs are original tunes that were written or co- written by Campbell. The album starts with “The Other Side of Pain”, a song with a you get what you deserve message from an ex- lover. Save Me From Myself” showcases Williams emotional vocal delivery. Campbell does a great job on the rocking “Hit and Run Driver”. The title track is a sweet waltz that is reminiscent of a song that Emmylou Harris would have recorded. Three Day in a Row” is a gritty blues shuffle that uses great imagery to paint the picture of the dire straits the in which character finds himself. Campbell and Williams tackle the beautiful Carl Perkins’ love song “Turn Around”, with the help of late Levon Helm on drums, in what was one of Helms’ last recordings. When I Stop Loving You” is a soulful love song that expresses one person’s persistent, unfading affection for their lover. It Ain’t Going To Be a Good Night” sounds just like it’s title suggests. You might want to find a place to hide because the cards are not in your favor. Probably most well known as a song from Bessie Smith’s catalog, “Might Sweetie Went Away” is presented Campbell and Williams in a bluesy New Orleans style, complete with a tuba taking the place of the bass. The husband and wife produce great harmonies on the rocking “The Wishing Well”. The swamp blues of “Slidin’ Delta” is a great way to wrap up the album. I really like the Jimmy Rogers yodel, provided in harmony, by Campbell and Williams. Add ‘Contraband Love’ on top of their 2. Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams have proved that they belong out front, not just behind other artists. With the amalgamation of all the styles, this album will be classified as Americana. That would not be an incorrect assertion. However, I find that most music that are given that label can only be defined one of two ways, either good or bad music. In fact, I think most music in any style can be defined that way. Contraband Love’ definitely falls into the good category. September 1. 3, 2. The Grascals have been favorites since their inception, and their latest album, ‘Before Breakfast’ is bound to keep them in bluegrass fans’ good graces. The IBMA award winning group consists of In a guitarist Terry Eldredge, bassist Terry Smith and mandolinist Danny Roberts, banjoist Kristin Scott Benson , fiddler Adam Hayes, and guitarist John Bryan. The group’s selection of songs on this new album fits them perfectly. The album starts out with the the dark song, “Sleepin’ With the Reaper”, penned Becky Buller and Grant Williams. I like the fact that bluegrass and country writers are not afraid to write songs like this. It reminds me that life is not always sunshine and roses. The Grascals follow that up with “Demons”, another song that has some more darker, but real lyrics. The song was written by country legend Bill Anderson and Jon Randall. You may recognize it, as the song was recorded earlier by Kenny Chesney. The mood picks up a bit with Delia, which will definitely get you toes to tapping. No bluegrass album would be complete with a gospel number or two. The Grascals have included “I’ve Been Redeemed”, “There Is You”, penned by Kelsi Hargill of Flatt Lonesome, and the Flatt and Scruggs composition “He Took Your Place”. Band member Terry Smith, along with his brother Bill, penned the song “Lonesome”, a tribute to the lonely souls of the world, and haven’t we all been one at sometime. The band tackles a couple of drinking song, with the funny Harley Allen song “Beer Tree”, and the Tim Stafford and Bobby Starnes penned “Clear Corn Liquor” that includes a refrain of “Whiskey Before Breakfast”. The Webb Pierce song “Pathway of Teardrops” will be recognized by most bluegrass fans from the catalog of The Osborne Brothers. The Grascals’ version is fantastic! Band members Danny Roberts and Adam Hayes’ “Lynchburg Chicken Run” is a toe tapping new instrumental. The fiddle, mandolin, and banjo work on “Lost and Lonesome” is outstanding. Listen to this song while driving at your own risk. You may end up with a speeding ticket. The Grascals have released some very enjoyable albums in their career. I have to say that ‘Before Breakfast’ is my favorite from beginning to end. The song selection, classic covers and new compositions, are spot on. This is an album you will want to listen to, not only before breakfast, but all day long. Give ‘Before Breakfast’ a listen today. September 6, 2. 01. I am going to tell you about an artist that you may not be familiar with. I was not aware of him until recently. His name is Tyler Childers. He is not a new artist. In fact, he has been writing and performing for many years. That may seem an overstatement about the 2. Childers, but the years of hitting the stage, traveling, and trying to make ends meet have shaped the Kentucky native into the person he is today. Tyler Childers’ latest album, ‘Purgatory’, is gaining attention across the country. Along with Childer’s great songwriting and singing, having Sturgill Simpson as a producer sure helps grab people’s attention. I do not want to underplay Simpson’s efforts on the album, but Childer’s is the star. It sounds as if Sturgill did what good producers do, and that is stay out of the way of the artist when they are creating. Childers’ music has shades of classic country, bluegrass, and soul. I try to stay away from comparisons, but I can hear the influence of Waylon Jennings, Sturgill Simpson, and maybe a little Steve Earle on this album. However, make no mistake, everything about this album is 1.
